Tottenham to complete Davinson Sanchez signing this weekend and deal could rise to club-record £40m

Tottenham expect to complete the signing of Ajax centre-back Davinson Sanchez this weekend.

Last night, Spurs agreed a package said to be worth more than £40million for the twice-capped Colombia international, who has already agreed personal terms on a five-year deal.

Sanchez did not play in Ajax’s 1-0 Europa League play-off defeat to Rosenborg last night because he was waiting for the all-clear to travel to London, but Spurs are not expecting to announce the deal today because the player is yet to undergo a medical and obtain a work permit. The club, however, are not anticipating any problems in sealing their first signing of the summer.

Spurs will pay Ajax £27m up front — making Sanchez their third most expensive signing, behind Moussa Sissoko and Erik Lamela — but the fee is certain to rise, depending on appearances and achievements.

Sanchez will become the fourth former Ajax player at the club, joining Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen, and manager Mauricio Pochettino is a huge admirer of the 21-year-old, who joined Ajax for less than £5m last year after helping Atletico Nacional win the Copa Libertadores.

He was Ajax’s player of the year last season, helping them to the Europa League Final, where they lost to Manchester United, but he has made just 45 appearances in European football in total.

His arrival will free up Kevin Wimmer to join West Brom in a deal worth around £15m, but the Austria defender will not be allowed to leave until Sanchez’s move is completed.

Tottenham are still targeting Everton’s Ross Barkley and Celta Vigo midfielder Papa Chiekh Diop.
