True Blue! Manchester United want him, but Cesc Fabregas hopes to stay at Chelsea and sign a new contract

Cesc Fabregas has confirmed that he wants to sign a new contract at Chelsea and extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas, who joined from Barcelona for £30million in 2014, has just over 18 months left on his current deal.

It has been suggested that Chelsea are about to start talks with the midfielder over a new deal, to put a stop to interest from Manchester United, whom the club face at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Fabregas insists that staying at Chelsea is his priority, although no new agreement appears to be imminent.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Standard Sport, he said: “Would I like to renew? Yes, because it is a club that has always treated me well.

“I believe the fans have a lot of respect for me and I have a lot of respect for them. I have given my all for the club for the last three-and-a-half years.

“This is a fantastic club for me and I have had a fantastic time here. Hopefully another contract will happen. Time will tell.”

The Spain international is one of Chelsea’s highest-paid players, on £160,000 a week, but has made a huge impact since joining the club.

He has helped them win two Premier League titles, in 2015 and 2017, as well as the League Cup two years ago.

Fabregas has provided 38 assists and 12 goals in the League for the club, but he turned 30 in May, and Chelsea, who are believed to be in no rush to start talks, have a policy whereby players are offered only one-year extensions once they are over 30.

However, Fabregas is convinced he can play at the highest level for many seasons to come.

“I know that people panic after players reach 30 and stuff like that, but I don’t believe in this. I feel well, I feel young in my mind. I train every day as hard as possible.

“I think in the last 48 games I have played in 47, and I only missed one because I was suspended against Tottenham in August.

“I always try to give my best. I will play at any moment, even when I’m sick or not 100 per cent.”
