Arsenal and Chelsea’s EFL Cup semi-final ties will both see the use of video assistant referees (VAR).

The first leg of the tie will take place on January 10 at Stamford Bridge with the second scheduled for a fortnight later at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger’s side have not won a League Cup tie against the Blues since 1976 – winning one leg of their 1998 semi-final but being eliminated in the second – but have lost only one of five meetings since Antonio Conte was appointed Chelsea manager.

The fixtures will be the first time an EFL competition has seen the system used, though the FA Cup third-round tie between Brighton and Crystal Palace will be the first use of it in a competitive English club game.

Germany’s Bundesliga and Italy’s Serie A already use the system in league competitions and it could be implemented in the Premier League as early as the 2018-19 season.

VAR will also be used in the Wembley final on February 25. It was also implemented at the stadium for England’s international friendlies against Germany and Brazil without ever being used.
