Watford will make more signings when the transfer window opens in January, says chief executive Scott Duxbury.

The club spent £53million in the summer, with notable recruits being Richarlison from Fluminense, Andre Gray from Burnley and Nathaniel Chalobah from Chelsea.

Watford have been rewarded with their best-ever start in the Premier League and sit in eighth place, three points behind Tottenham, last season’s runners-up. But they are hoping to bring in some new players to keep the momentum going under manager Marco Silva.

Duxbury told Standard Sport: “We are already identifying targets for January and next summer. We don’t stop. The window is almost a misnomer for us. We tend to scout all year round.

“There is nothing to stop you having discussions with clubs.

“We like to get our business concluded very early, otherwise it is inefficient and inflationary. We have had a quick evolution from a Championship squad (in 2015) to a Premier League one.

“Hopefully, you get to a point where you have a fixed 25-man squad and you’re happy with the 11 on the pitch and the cover, so the amount of activity starts to reduce.”

Watford have already opened negotiations with Gothenburg over a £3.3m deal for goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg and have been linked with Leicester striker Islam Slimani and Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke.
