Pablo Zabaleta has called on West Ham to improve in ‘every way’ as they approach their first game under David Moyes, but insists they must be positive.

After an international break which has seen Slaven Bilic sacked and the former Manchester United and Sunderland boss appointed, the Hammers begin their new era at Watford on Sunday afternoon.

Having arrived on a free transfer in the summer, 32-year-old Zabaleta has been one of the standout performers in a poor West Ham side so far.

The ex-Manchester City man, and two time Premier League title winner, knows there is a lot to improve on but has been encouraged by training and has called for a positive atmosphere ahead of the game.

“Training has been pretty good,” Zabaleta told the West Ham website.

“We’ve been working really well over the past few days. Of course, it’s going to be a tough game but we have a good squad – we need to work well and be focused on our next game.

“If you look at the performances this season – especially against the top sides – we need to improve in every way – offensively, defensively and we need to be a more creative team, we need to try and not concede too many goals – we need to step up.

“It is time to be positive and look forward to the season. There’s a long way to go and everything depends on us which is good.”
