Gareth Southgate is yet to appoint a permanent successor to Wayne Rooney as England captain.

Rooney stood down from international duty in August after three years as skipper of the national side. The Everton star was first handed the armband by Roy Hodgson in 2014, and retained the captaincy under both Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate.

But the armband did not make Rooney immune from omission, and he was axed from Southgate's England starting XI before losing his squad place for fixtures against Scotland and France in June. When offered his place back for the September internationals - albeit as a fringe player - Rooney declined and promptly announced his international retirement.

England manager Southgate has passed the armband around in Rooney's absence over the last 12 months, and has spoken of a squad with a number of "emerging leaders". Joe Hart was named captain for the game against Lithuania in March - just days after Gary Cahill was given the honour in a friendly against Germany in Dortmund.

Harry Kane was later named captain for the World Cup qualifier in Scotland before subsequently leading the side in a friendly against France at the Stade de France.

"I want to continue sharing the responsibility [of captain]," said Southgate in September before naming Jordan Henderson skipper for the wins over Malta and Slovakia.

Three points against Slovenia on Thursday will see England qualify for next summer's World Cup, by which time Southgate will hope to have settled on a permanent successor to Rooney.

"Southgate has said he is going to take his time and we do have plenty of leaders," said Kane, throwing his hat into the ring on Saturday.
