Full time: Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City

There’s the whistle and United have seen off City in the first ever Manchester derby played on foreign soil.

90 min: Final minute in Houston and it’s looks like it’s going to be United’s night. City win a free kick from distance ut play it back and now don’t seem in any particular hurry to attack. The fourth official signals for two minutes of stoppage time.

87 min: City still trying for a goal to please their fans but the pace has clearly slowed in the final stage of this one.

83 min: A peach of a pass by Nasri finds the foot of Jesus, but it’s poorly finished and it sails into the crowd. Surely that should have been City’s first.

80 min: A bit of showboating by Pogba down by the touchline, but his cross on goal is cleared toward the halfway line.

76 min: A bit of a lull in the action as full time draws near. Meanwhile, Michael Meagher writes in with a sartorial question.

Dear Bryan,

What’s the significance of the wasp/bee in the middle of everyone’s shirt?

Yours,

Michael

Both sides are featuring the symbolic Manchester Worker Bee on all of the players’ shirts. These uniforms will be auctioned off with all proceeds going towards the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, a cause set up in the aftermath of May’s attacks at the MEN Arena.

72 min: Martial’s cross deflects out off a City player and United have another corner, but it’s quickly cleared.

71 min: Nasri tries to find Jesus with a cute through ball inside the area, but he puts a bit too much on it and it’s out for a goal kick.

67 min: Signs of life for City, who win a corner for the first time in a hot minute. Nasri takes it but it’s headed harmlessly into the keeper’s waiting hands.

64 min: Pogba has a go from 18 yards that misses wide left. Goal kick. Lots of cheers from United fans in the cheap seats who saw the ball rattle the net and didn’t initially realize it wasn’t a good. Big stadium, this.

62 min: Indeed, Martial, Fellaini and Carrick enter for Mkhitarian, Rashford and Herrera. Carrick will wear the captain’s armband for the final half hour.

53 min: Lukaku breaks down his man and fires a left-footed shot from 18 yards that beats the keeper and rattles the woodwork, missing the goal by a matter of inches. What a belter that nearly was!

52 min: United win their first corner of the half. Rashford standing over it. He finds Lukaku surging toward the far post but he’s unable to head it on target. Instead, it’s out for a goal kick.

48 min: Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Samir Nasri, Brahim Diaz, Eliaquim Mangala, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi are all on for City, with Ederson, Walker, Fernandinho and Foden staying on.

For United: Romero, Darmian, Bailly and Jones enter for De Gea, Blind, Smalling and Lindelof.

46 min: Lots of changes to both sides at the half. Wholesale. As in more than I’ll be able to immediately get to, but we’ll brief you as soon as possible.

The players have emerged from the tunnel for the second half. We should be under way shortly. A fun, fast-paced first half if not always the cleanest.

45 min: Blind picks up a yellow card for a foul and City will have a free kick from a good position just before half-time. Nothing comes of it and there’s the whistle.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City (Rashford, 39 min)

And just like that Rashford has doubled the pleasure of United, who collectively made ribbons of City’s back four before the 19-year-old finishes nicely from the right side.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City (Lukaku, 37 min)

A long ball is played to the new signing Lukaku up the left side and Ederson rushes off his line outside the area and he’s bottled it! That leaves it to Lukaku to finish calmly from a tight angle.

30 min: Smalling denies not one but two attempts in a chaotic spell in front of the City net, first from Roberts and then from Sterling.

28 min: A bit of a lull in this one. And as the players enjoy the climate-controlled temperatures under the roof in Houston, one of our devoted readers isn’t so fortunate.

@BryanAGraham wish we had a closed roof and air-conditioning out here. Teachers vs kids game and to start in this heat! "Feels like" 39! pic.twitter.com/OG4XS4kwJb

26 min: City win a corner, then another. Nothing. But United are quick on the counter and Mkhitaryan wins a foul from 30 yards. Pogba stands over the free kick and curls it toward the post but it sails wide of the target.

18 min: Rashford tries to shoot from outside the area but De Bruyne clips from from behind. The shot trickles awry and Rashford is down in pain, but only briefly.

14 min: Pogba picks Aguero’s pocket and now it’s United on the break. City track back nicely but United are working it with short passes in the middle third. Now a long ball through to Rashford, who’s onside and tries to take his man one on one, but it’s out for a corner. Rashford takes it and plays it short, but United are unable to leverage the position into a shot on goal.

9 min: Now United are on the march and the ball falls to Daley Blind, who’s low shot from 20 yards is easily retrieved by Ederson.

7 min: Well worked by City up the left side of the pitch. The attack is briefly disrupted by United, but City keep it and now Sterling has a right-footed shot from the edge of the area and De Gea makes the save. Better from City there.

4 min: Herrera has a goal from outside the area and City’s new signing Ederson parries it over the crossbar. It’s a corner for United but nothing comes of it.

2 min: The retractable roof atop NRG Stadium is closed and the air conditioning is on. Not a bad shout with temperatures of 87F outside with 67% humidity. And the crowd sounds loud! Kompany rips down Lukaku at the halfway line and the ref whistles for an easy foul.

1 min: And we’re under way! Both sides wearing their familiar home strips, City attacking from left to right.

The teams

Here’s a look at tonight’s starters. And here’s a look at the complete team sheets. Thankfully, an NFL stadium is well equipped to accommodate City’s oversized roster.

Manchester United

De Gea, Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind, Pogba, Herrera, Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Rashford, Lukaku

Manchester City

Ederson, Adarabioyo, Kompany, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Walker, Foden, De Bruyne, Sterling, Aguero, Roberts

A Manchester derby in southeast Texas in the month of July? Sounds about right. Welcome everyone to tonight’s pre-season friendly between Manchester United and Manchester City in something called the International Champions Cup, a exhibition competition that’s now in its fifth year. Who among us could forget where they were when United first won this trophy back in 2014 with a 3-1 win over Liverpool?

All joking aside, exhibitions like these are the football equivalent of the tennis hit-and-giggle: mostly light-hearted exercises in brand-building and cobweb-shedding that will no doubt please the masses who turn out to NRG Stadium, the 72,220-seat home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.

Kickoff is just over 40 minutes away. Stay tuned and we’ll be back with the team sheets directly.

Bryan will be here shortly, in the meantime here’s the latest on Man City’s summer:

Manchester City are one of four clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, whom Monaco are threatening to report for allegedly making an unauthorised approach to Kylian Mbappé.

Monaco’s move reveals City are targeting the 18-year-old forward, considered one of Europe’s finest young players.

The French champions issued a statement on Thursday that said: “Monaco regretfully notice that ‘important’ European football clubs made contacts with Kylian Mbappé (and his entourage) without its authorisation. Monaco want to remind these clubs that such actions are contrary to the article 211 of the administrative regulation of the French Football League (Ligue de Football Professionnel) and to the article 18.3 of the regulation of the status and the transfer of the players of Fifa.
