Jurgen Klopp to axe Liverpool FC defender in favour of 20-year-old – report
The Liverpool FC manager is prepared to axe Dejan Lovren and bring in England Under-21 international Joe Gomez, according to the Daily Mirror
Jurgen Klopp is set to axe Dejan Lovren and give Joe Gomez an extended run in the Liverpool team in an attempt to reverse their disastrous defensive performances, according to reports in England.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that the German coach is finally set to take Lovren out of the Liverpool team and give Gomez the chance to establish himself as a first-choice centre-half.
The Croatia international was replaced in the 32nd minute of Liverpool’s 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last weekend after Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min scored twice in the opening minutes.
Gomez has deputised for Nathaniel Clyne at right-back in the Premier League this season, but the former Charlton Athletic defender is though to prefer a centre-half role in the Liverpool team.
If the England Under-21 international moves into the centre of defence, Klopp will turn to promising teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.
Liverpool have conceded 15 times in five games in the Premier League to leave the Merseyside outfit in ninth place in the table.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
Liverpool signed four players in the summer transfer window to bolster his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.
