Former Liverpool FC captain Sami Hyypia explains why Daniel Sturridge doesn't always start of Jurgen Klopp
Sami Hyypia has claimed that Jurgen Klopp doesn’t trust Daniel Sturridge in Liverpool’s biggest games.
The England international made his fourth start of the Premier League season last weekend as Liverpool eased to a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
The promoted side managed to frustrate the 18-time English champions for almost 50 minutes before Sturridge produced a classy finish to break the deadlock.
Liverpool welcomed Group E opponents Maribor to Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday night following a 7-0 victory in Slovenia last month.
However, Klopp surprisingly denied Sturridge is first Champions League start in a Liverpool shirt despite the chance to rack up a big scoreline against the Group E minnows.
Sturridge came off the bench to score Liverpool’s third goal in a 3-0 win after Mohamed Salah and Emre Can had put the home side in charge.
Former Liverpool captain Hyypia doesn’t believe Sturridge is capable of producing the style of football Klopp demands in Liverpool’s biggest games.
“He would have suited this game,” Hyypia told BT Sport.
“Liverpool didn’t expect much of a threat from Maribor. Maybe Klopp is thinking in the bigger games that his defensive activity is not what Klopp wants.
“Maybe that’s why he isn’t starting that much.”
Sturridge moved to Liverpool in a £12m deal from Chelsea in the 2013 January transfer window under Brendan Rodgers.
The England striker scored 21 times in 27 games in the Premier League in his first full season at Anfield in 2013-14.
