Sami Hyypia: How Jurgen Klopp can improve Liverpool FC defence

The former Liverpool FC captain explains how Jurgen Klopp can resolve their defensive issues

Sami Hyypia says Jurgen Klopp needs to improve the communication between his defenders to resolve their issues at the back.

The Merseyside outfit have managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets in successive 3-0 victories over Huddersfield Town and Maribor in their last two games.

However, Liverpool have struggled defensively this season after conceding 15 goals in five games on the road in the Premier League.

All three of Klopp’s centre-halves – Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip – have struggled with form to raise concerns about Liverpool’s lack of options at the back.

The Merseyside outfit were heavily linked with a move to sign Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.

Former Liverpool captain Hyypia believes a lack of communication amongst Klopp’s defence is the biggest problem that needs to be resolved.

“They need to cut individual mistakes. The team is conceding goals with mistakes,” Hyypia told BT Sport.

“Everyone makes mistakes so you can’t cut them all out [but] there is a lack of communication. They are not doing it together.

“There are many situations where the centre-halves don’t know who is going or staying. I see that it might be part of the problem.”

Liverpool will make the trip to West Ham United in their next Premier League game at London Stadium this weekend.

The Reds are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 12 points behind current leaders Manchester City.

The Merseyside outfit are sitting at the top of Champions League Group E following successive victories over Maribor.
