Liverpool FC told Arsenal star is capable of replacing Philippe Coutinho
Paul Merson believes Jack Wilshere is capable of replacing Liverpool FC midfielder Philippe Coutinho
Jack Wilshere would be capable of replacing Philippe Coutinho in the Liverpool FC team, according to Paul Merson.
The Reds could be facing a new battle to keep the Liverpool FC number 10 at Anfield amid talk of Barcelona making a fresh bid to sign the South American playmaker in the January transfer window.
Coutinho was linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer and the Brazilian even handed in a transfer request but Liverpool FC refused to consider the sale of the 25-year-old midfielder.
The Brazilian has scored seven goals and has made six assists in 14 appearances in the Premier League this term to produce some excellent form despite uncertainty surrounding his future.
Wilshere has managed to fight his way back into the Arsenal team since returning from a loan spell at Bournemouth and the England international has started the north London side’s last three Premier League games.
The 25-year-old could be available on a free transfer in the summer unless Arsenal tie down the box-to-box midfielder on a new contract before his current deal expires at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson told Jurgen Klopp that Wilshere would be a player capable of emulating Coutinho’s style of play.
“Losing Coutinho will hurt them,” Merson told the Daily Star.
“They need a midfielder who can burst forward and play the ball forward – a player like Jack Wilshere.”
