MANCHESTER UNITED flop Guillermo Varela seems certain to rejoin Uruguayans Penarol.

The right-back, 24, has played just four times in four years at Old Trafford and injury limited him to just seven games on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt last season.

Now the Under-20 international is likely to reunite with his childhood club on a three-year contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The newspaper quotes a "source close to the player" as telling it: "Guillermo decided to play in Penarol for personal tranquility."

United chief Jose Mourinho has been revamping his squad this summer and seems likely to rebuild his defence around Eric Bailly.

Varela is one of the lesser-known casualties as United hope to transform last season's sixth-finish into a true title challenge.
