Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has £36m bid rejected by Barcelona for Sergi Roberto

MANCHESTER UNITED have been knocked back in their pursuit of Barcelona's Sergi Roberto, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho's side have apparently had a £36million offer rejected for the versatile midfielder.

Roberto is highly-regarded at Barcelona having broken through the youth system to cement a place in the first-team.

He also created history by scoring the vital winner when Barca produced one of the greatest Champions League comebacks ever against Paris Saint-Germain last season.

And Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo believe United have no chance in luring Roberto to the Premier League this summer.

Title rivals Chelsea and French champions Monaco have also been interested in landing his signature.

United boss Mourinho is in the market for one more player following the £40m arrival of Nemanja Matic.

And if Mourinho finally gets his man, it could be Real Madrid ace Gareth Bale.

The Portuguese boss, who became the first manager to spend £1billion, admitted 'I will fight other coaches' for his signature.

Speaking ahead of the Super Cup showdown with Real Madrid, he said: "Well if he’s playing tomorrow, no I wouldn’t think of that, it’s because he’s in the coach’s plans and the club’s plans, because he also has that motivation to continue at RM.

“So I haven’t even thought about the possibility.

“If he is not in the club’s plans, that with the arrival of another player would mean he was on his way out, I will try to be waiting for him on the other side and fight with other coaches that would want him on their team.

“But if he plays tomorrow, that is the best confirmation that he is wanted by the team.”
