Newcastle vs Tottenham team news: Spurs youngster Kyle Walker-Peters makes first competitive start as Moussa Sissoko also makes rare appearance

All the information you need to know ahead of the Premier League curtain raiser

MOUSSA SISSOKO will make a shock start against his former club as Mauricio Pochettino also opts for youngster Kyle Walker-Peters at full-back.

The French midfielder made just eight Premier League starts last season but has a chance to cement his place in the first-team.

Walker-Peters is also making his first competitive start following the departure of Kyle Walker.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has left club captain Jamaal Lascelles on the bench.

NEWCASTLE are back in the big time following their season in the Championship.

And their Premier League curtain raiser is a tough test against Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham.

Spurs are the only side in the top flight who haven't strengthened their squad this summer.

Meanwhile Rafa Benitez is set to hand competitive debuts to the likes of Jacob Murphy and Florian Lejeune.

Both sides could be at the opposite ends of the table by the end of the season but the clash on Sunday will be a good indication of each side's progress over the summer.

Poch will be looking for lethal duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane to hit the ground running after a slow start last season.

And they will take confidence ending their pre-season with an impressive 2-0 win over Juventus.

Here's all you need to know about the clash.

FACT ME

  • This will be a repeat of Newcastle’s last Premier League game in May 2016 – when they thrashed Spurs 5-1 at St James’ Park.
  • There have been 14 goals scored in the last three Premier League meetings between these two clubs at St James’ Park.
  • The Magpies have won only one opening match across their last nine league seasons, but that came against Spurs; 2-1 in 2012 (D4 L4).
  • Rafa Benitez has not lost any of his previous eight Premier League home games as a manager against Spurs (W5 D3 L0).
  • This is the seventh successive Premier League season that Tottenham will play their opening Premier League game away from home.
  • Harry Kane is one goal away from a century for Spurs in all competitions – he has netted 99 goals in 165 games so far, including hat-tricks in his two previous appearances.
  • Kane has scored 20 goals in his last 15 Premier League games against newly promoted sides – three of his six top-flight hat-tricks have been against newly promoted teams (Leicester in 2014-15, Bournemouth in 2015-16 and Hull last season).
  • However, Kane has never scored a Premier League goal in August (10 games).
  • Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle averaged a goal every 93 minutes in the Championship last season, scoring 23 goals; he also scored in his last top-flight appearance against Spurs for Crystal Palace in January 2015.
  • None of the last nine winners of the Championship have won their first match in the Premier League after promotion (D2 L7). The last team to achieve this were Sunderland in August 2007, who beat Tottenham on the opening day thanks to a late strike from Michael Chopra.
  • Christian Eriksen was involved in the build up sequence to 253 open play shots last season in the Premier League; more than any other player in the competition.
