Rooney was left out of the last Three Lions squad and faces an uphill battle to make the World Cup side next summer.

The 31-year-old left Old Trafford to return to his boyhood club this summer to rejuvenate his career after falling flat under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Southgate will also be keeping a close eye on the likes of defender Michael Keane, youngster Tom Davies, Jordan Pickford and Phil Jagielka.

England face a double header of World Cup qualifying fixtures next month against Malta and Slovakia.

The games on September 1 and 4 come just three matches into the Premier League season leaving Southgate with little time to pick his squad.

But the opening matches are a perfect opportunity for England's fringe players to prove why they should play a part in England's road to Russia.

Southgate will also be at Old Trafford on Sunday to see Manchester United host West Ham.

He will be keeping a close eye on Joe Hart whose No.1 spot is in doubt with Stoke's Jack Butland back to full fitness.
