Portuguese outlet Record claims that the Hammers are currently in advanced negotiations with the Primeira Liga leaders.

And he is reportedly due to undergo a medical in East London next week.

West Ham are prepared to smash their club record for a second time this summer to capture the highly-rated Portugal midfielder.

Carvalho, who has scored nine goals in 137 appearances for the club in four seasons, has a reported £40m release clause in his contract which still has three years to run.

Sporting are trying to hold out for as much as £36m before sanctioning the move, but the Hammers are hopeful of winning the battle over fees.

The Portugal international, who joined Sporting Lisbon in 2012, is understood to want a move to the Premier League.

The midfielder, born in Angola, has 37 caps for Portugal and was part of the squad that won Euro 2016.

If West Ham manage to clinch his signing it would round off an impressive summer of transfer activity.

Manager Slaven Bilic has signed Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta from Manchester City, along with former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez.

Marko Arnautovic's £24.5m capture from Stoke is the current club record fee paid out.

Bilic's men begin their Premier League campaign away at Manchester United on Sunday.
