Five things we learnt

Manchester United 4 West Ham 0: Romelu Lukaku keeps up impressive debut record and Nemanja Matic could be signing of the season

Hammers' new-look strike force needs time to gel before fans get to see the goals fly in.

MANCHESTER UNITED strolled to their first points of the season with an impressive 4-0 win over West Ham.

Boss Jose Mourinho watched on as summer signing Romelu Lukaku scored twice to open his Premier League account for the season whilst Anthony Martial bagged the third.

Paul Pogba then fired in the fourth as the Red Devils threatened to run riot.

The Portuguese manager will be delighted how comfortable his side were throughout the 90 minutes but Slaven Bilic has serious work to do on the training ground.

Here's what we learnt from Sunday's clash...

VICTOR LINDELOF IS NOT FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH UNDER JOSE MOURINHO

HE was set to be the key man in central defence for Manchester United after signing for £31million this summer.

But the ex-Benfica man didn't even make the substitute bench in United's opening Premier League fixture.

It has left serious question marks over Mourinho's faith in the 23-year-old.

Reports claim that Lindelof was fit to face the Hammers but was instead dropped because of his pre-season form.

It now appears that Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are all above him in the centre-back pecking order.

Mourinho adopted a similar stance when he signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan last summer.

The Armenian was left out of the team initially but eventually grew from strength to strength for the Red Devils.

ROMELU LUKAKU CONTINUES DEBUT SCORING STREAK

THE towering Belgian is Manchester United's main man in attack this season.

And he kick-started his league campaign with a debut goal with just 33 minutes on the clock.

He then deservedly doubled his tally in the second half as West Ham's defence failed to cope with his pace and strength.

But what's more impressive is that Lukaku has now scored on his debut for his last three clubs.

He wasted no time in finding the net at West Brom before doing the same at Everton.

He came within four goals of winning the Golden Boot last season and will be aiming to go one better this time around.

CHELSEA'S LOSS IS MANCHESTER UNITED'S GAIN

CHELSEA'S decision to sell Nemanja Matic to their title rivals seems crazier by the game.

Particularly as Antonio Conte's side now down to the bare bones in central midfield.

The Serbian midfielder looks a natural in the heart of Manchester United's midfield and appears an inspired signing by Jose Mourinho.

He was United's best player in the pre-season defeat against Real Madrid and was sensational yet again today.

His positioning also allows Paul Pogba to push forward and add extra threat to United's attack.

WEST HAM'S NEW-LOOK ATTACK NEEDS TIME TO GEL

SLAVEN BILIC spent a combined £41million to land Stoke's Marko Arnautovic and striker Javier Hernadez.

The duo lined up alongside Andre Ayew as a front three but posed little threat to Manchester United's goal.

Arnautovic had a header that rebounded off the top of the bar but Bilic would have been expecting more from his attackers.

But in the Austrian international they have flair and pace whilst Hernandez knows where the back of the net is.

They will undoubtedly score goals and win matches for the Hammers but fans need to keep patient and wait for them to learn each other's game.

LEAVING HIS MARC

MARCUS RASHFORD is going to be a vital player for Manchester United this season.

He has won over Jose Mourinho by starting the opening fixture and repaid his manager's faith with a very impressive display.

He looks like he has built his strength up over the summer and his blistering pace caused West Ham's defence trouble on several occasions.

He didn't score, although hit the inside of the post, but grabbed an assist in Romelu Lukaku's opener.

The duo could form an exciting and formidable partnership this season and Rashford will prove vital in creating space for the big Belgian.

If he can improve his finishing, they have a potential world-class player on their hands.
