Jose Mourinho fails to make his mark on penalty shootout as Team Ferdinand prevail at Game for Grenfell
A tense penalty shootout is all that could separate the two sides after the final whistle blew at 2-2
TEAM FERDINAND took on Team Shearer at Loftus Road to raise money for the victims of the Grenfell fire tragedy.
The fixture finished 2-2, before Olly Murs rocketed the final penalty of the shootout past a gloveless Jose Mourinho to secure the win.
Stars from sport, entertainment and music backgrounds gathered in force to put on a blinding show in front of the sell-out 17,000 crowd at the QPR stadium.
Following a 2-2 scoreline at the final whistle, the two sides settled the dual using the new ABBA penalty system.
Jose Mourinho showed a lack of skill between the sticks after letting in every shot from the spot, with Olly Murs rocketing home the final penalty to clinch the win.
However, despite an afternoon of action - the goals and comical moments were undermined throughout by the true purpose behind the fixture.
Eight firefighters that were present during the tragedy were introduced as substitutes and Emeli Sande performed a tranquil version of her track 'Read all about it' at half-time.
Four residents who managed to escape the Grenfell blaze also featured in the latter stages, much to the appreciation of the crowd.
Two teams took part - one managed by Alan Shearer the other by QPR legend Les Ferdinand.
However, the two well-knit sides could only be separated by a tense penalty shoot-out when the final whistle blew at 2-2.
Olympic legend Mo Farah opened the scoring after just 90 seconds for Team Ferdinand with a sublime strike from inside of the area.
After being subbed off by the gaffer just before the interval, Farah played down his world-class performance.
Had the English transfer window not slammed shut on Thursday, no doubt a number of clubs would have been scrambling for his signature this summer.
Former Manchester City star Trevor Sinclair responded for Team Shearer and levelled the scoring, but his strike ruffled a few feathers as he was seen to be in an offside position.
The former City midfielder doubled his tally with a free kick from distance, which rebounded off the woodwork and fired into the back of Shay Given's goal.
Jose Mourinho was introduced on the 63rd minute to replace David James, where he spent the remainder of the fixture between the sticks.
Prior to kick-off manager Shearer mocked the Portuguese boss by saying he could not get 'the best manager ever' Sir Alex Ferguson to play.
The United boss adapted to the rhythm of the game effortlessly and protected the goal as if it was made of gold.
Well, that is until Chris Edwards created space in front of goal and confidently slotted the ball into the back of the net to level the scoring. Right place, right time from the Kasabian band member.
The fixture went to penalties, where Mourinho continued his performance in goal. However, Team Ferdinand were faultless and Olly Murs struck the winning strike into the roof of the net.
