The Gunners were interested in signing the 18-year-old until Monaco demanded £164million for his services

Speaking on French TV show Telefoot, Wenger said: "Mbappe could be (the next) Pele.

"There are no limits to how far he can go."

He added: "I wanted him too, but €180m is too much for us. He has a balanced game for a striker.

"He scores goals and he gives chances. It’s the quality of great players."

The France international sealed a loan move to PSG on transfer deadline day, though the deal comes with the option to sign Mbappe next summer for £162million.

The 18-year-old gained international recognition after his exploits for Monaco last season, helping them to win the French title and reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Last season, he scored 26 goals in 44 appearances for Monaco and has since established himself as a full international.

His fine form had him linked with every major club in Europe - including Arsenal.

It’s understood the Gunners launched a £123million bid for Mbappe back in July.

Wenger also confirmed Arsenal will 'come back for Thomas Lemar' following the Gunners' failed €100million [£91m] deadline day attempt.

"€100m for Lemar? Yes all true, I wanted him," said the Arsenal boss. "He decided to stay at Monaco. We will come back for him."
