Derby set to swoop for Joe Ledley after his release from Crystal Palace in the summer

Welsh international is being targeted by Rams chief Gary Rowett as he aims to improve his midfield

DERBY are considering a swoop for Joe Ledley after his release from Crystal Palace, according to reports.

The Welsh international is available on a free after the Eagles decided against renewing his contract over the summer.

And the Derby Telegraph claims Rams boss Gary Rowett  is eyeing a move for Ledley, 30, as he looks to bolster his midfield.

Derby's deadline day move for Maikel Kieftenbeld collapsed after his paperwork was not submitted on time.

And the failed switch left Rowett short of options in the middle of the park as he bids for promotion.

The Rams sit 15th in the Championship after a disappointing start, with defeats against Bristol City and Barnsley highlighting a need for strengthening.

Ledley would bring a wealth of experience with over 500 club appearances and 73 international caps under his belt.

He was linked with a dream move to hometown club Cardiff in the summer but it failed to materialise.

Derby fielded seven players over the age of 30 in their 4-1 defeat at the Robins and concerns have been raised about and ageing squad.

But Rowett has few options in the loan or free transfer market and may be forced to turn to Ledley.

The Welshman last played for the Eagles in February but has been involved for his country since then.

Wales chief Chris Coleman will be desperate for the playmaker to find a club to gain match fitness ahead of some crucial qualifiers.
