Oxford, 18, joined Marcus Rashford, Kyle-Walker Peters, Joe Gomez, Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the young English talent nominated for the prestigious award.
Hammers boss, Slaven Bilic, didn't want the nomination to go to Oxford's head, sparking the controversial comment.
The youngster is currently on loan at Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, where he is looking to add some much needed first team experience.
Since making his debut for West Ham against Arsenal in 2015, the English defender has gone on to earn just six more appearances for the London side.
Oxford is yet to start a game for the Germans but may move on from West Ham in the January transfer window.
Manchester United may reignite their interest in the young defender, after trying to sign him before he joined West Ham.
The centre-half from Edmonton, North London, will certainly spark the interest of other Premier League sides should he choose to depart from the London Stadium.
