Former Manchester City star Paul Lake and wife promise to ‘do a naked conga’ if Kevin De Bruyne does not win PFA Player of the Year

The Belgian has been in explosive form this season as the Citizens continue to dominate the Premier League

IF the PFA Player of the Year award was given out now then Kevin De Bruyne would be stitched on for it.

And Manchester City favourite Paul Lake, for one, will be praying the brilliant Belgian can maintain his amazing form.

His wife Joanne — a writer and City fanatic — tweeted on Saturday evening that they believe it is already a foregone conclusion.

She posted: “If Kevin De Bruyne doesn’t win the PFA Player of the Year, Paul and I will do a naked conga around Kwik Save Stockport car park.” Even in late spring when the winner is announced, that is a pretty bleak spot.

Quite frankly, you would not wish that on anybody.

Fortunately for the Lakes, De Bruyne is out-stripping the rest of the Premier League superstars by some distance.

And he looks a good bet to finally end City’s long wait for some individual recognition when the gongs are handed out in the spring.

They scratch their heads at the Etihad how the PFA and Football Writers’ Association player of the year awards have evaded them despite the club’s success since 2011.

David Silva, Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure have all been in with a shout at some point.

Sergio Aguero, who has averaged almost 30 goals a season in just over six blistering years, has never even made the Team of the Year.

That should all change with De Bruyne — who went through his full repertoire of passing with Saturday’s irresistible display against Stoke.

Boss Pep Guardiola said last month KDB is one of the “best players he has ever seen in his life” — and to be fair he has seen a few good ones.

On Saturday, Potters chief Mark Hughes said the Belgian was “head and shoulders above any other player in the Premier League”. City fans affectionately call him ‘Our Kev’ — and most of them know how lucky they are to have their £54million superstar.

And it says everything that David Silva — such a special player for this club over the past seven years — is having to play second fiddle to De Bruyne. Of course, he is playing superbly, but there is no escaping the feeling De Bruyne, 26, is the main man now.

He played a key part in the first two goals, scored by Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling. That was the England striker’s sixth goal in his last six Premier League games by the way — and he also had two assists on Saturday.

But it was De Bruyne’s passes for the goals scored by Jesus and Leroy Sane during an electrifying second half which summed up his form.

He had gone off to put his feet up by the time Bernardo Silva scored the seventh — his first in a City shirt.

David Silva and Fernandinho also got on the scoresheet. De Bruyne did not — but he was still one of the most impressive players on show.

Portuguese ace Bernardo said: “Kevin is an amazing player.

“It is a pleasure to play alongside these kind of players.

“He showed us again that he is one of the best in the world.”
