Moments before his substitution, Schneiderlin fell to the floor after a last-ditch tackle to prevent Myziane Maolida from shooting.

He received treatment on the pitch but had to come off.

Speaking after the 2-1 defeat, under pressure Ronald Koeman confirmed the  midfielder had picked up a knock on his ankle.

The Toffees boss does not yet know how serious the injury will be.

The 27-year-old is renowned for his slide tackling ability, but this time the risk did not pay off.

Sigurdsson provided an attacking element for the Premier League side, who were chasing a 1-0 goal deficit when the substitution took place.

Everton remain bottom of Europa League Group E after a 2-1 defeat.

Ronald Koeman's side have only managed to pick up one point from their opening three matches and boos rang out around Goodison Park at full time.

Schneiderlin, who joined the Toffees from Manchester United, will be hoping to recover before they host Arsenal on Sunday.

Evertyon have failed to find their feet in the Premier League this season, with only eight points from their first eight outings.
