The Special One is now considering a move for Benfica left-back Grimaldo, who shone for the Primeira Liga champs as a goalkeeping mistake gifted Marcus Rashford United's winner.

Mourinho is now understood to have ordered United scouts to keep ex-Barcelona starlet Grimaldo, 22, under regular observation.

The defender has won two Spain Under-21 caps, plus 19 more at various youth levels, and is on the brink of the senior national squad.

Left-back has been a problem position at Old Trafford this season, with injuries to Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.

Both Daley Blind and Ashley Young have played out of position to fill the gap.

Grimaldo is a Barcelona academy product, who spent four years in the Catalans' B team before a bargain £1.4million move to Benfica in January 2016.

He has since helped bring two league titles to the Stadium of Light, as well as a Portuguese Cup, League Cup and two Super Cups.

Under contract until 2021, the Valencia-born ace has a £50m release clause written into the deal.

Barca are entitled to a percentage of any future sale.
