Everton sacked Koeman on Monday after a disastrous start to the season, topped off by a 5-2 home loss to Arsenal.

Former Rangers and Sunderland chief Advocaat is due to step down after Holland's friendlies against Scotland and Romania next month.

And the 70-year-old said he will urge the KNVB, Holland's FA, to appoint ex-Southampton manager Koeman in his place.

Koeman, 54, had previous spells as both Holland and Barcelona No2. He has since coached Holland's big three clubs as well as Benfica and Valencia.

Advocaat said: "I've always said that if someone of Ronald Koeman's calibre becomes available then the KNVB should do something about it.

"He has played and managed at the top level, he is at the ideal age, and now he is free. Let's not forget that the task in waiting is not an easy one.

COME AND KOE Sacked Everton boss Ronald Koeman linked with Leicester City job but would he be a good replacement for Craig Shakespeare?

"I think Ronald would do a very good job. He exudes a certain authority, and I think there are few people in Holland who could object to his appointment.

"If the KNVB ask my opinion, I will recommend him wholeheartedly."

Advocaat also urged his assistant Ruud Gullit to stay on, insisting the former Chelsea and Newcastle boss would form a dream partnership with Koeman.

He added: "Just imagine Ronald Koeman and Ruud Gullit on the Holland coaching staff. They are two tremendous ambassadors for us.

"With them in charge doors would be thrown open to us all around the world. That would be terrific."

Advocaat is ending his third stint in charge of Holland following their failure to qualify for next summer's World Cup finals.

He had a successful spell as Rangers boss between 1998 and 2001, and saved Sunderland from relegation in 2015.
