Clyne hopes to recover in time to appear for his national side at this summer's World Cup.

The Reds player started light-training in September but has suffered a major setback which may see him out until February.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said: “He was in a good way, running with high intensity but the muscle showed a little reaction. That was not an injury, and usually with a healthy and fit player you wouldn’t even think about it.

“In his case because it was a little sign again from the back, we took him out and it’s a few steps back again.”

The 26-year-old will have to fight for his place at club and international level, with his replacements prospering in his absence.

For Liverpool, youngsters Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have impressed Jurgen Klopp.

While for England, Kyle Walker and Kieran Tripper have both put their name forward to be starting at Russia 2018.

Clyne will have to convince Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate that he is fully fit and up for the challenge when he returns next year.
