The 26-year-old centre-back has committed his future at the Liberty Stadium until 2021 and ended hopes of Burnley and Leeds snapping him up in the window.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche had looked at the ex-Arsenal defender to replace Michael Keane following the England international’s departure to Everton.

And Leeds were interested in taking him again after a successful loan last season at Elland Road where he played 45 times in the Championship.

But he is set to compete for a first-team role under Paul Clement at Swansea this season after his fresh terms.

He has also had a loan at Birmingham but his form last season has persuaded Clement that he should be in the Premier League.

Bournemouth attempted to sign him in January as his contract had just 18 months left – but his new deal means there is no risk on him going on a free.

He will be fighting for a starting place with Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez, Mike van der Hoorn in Clement’s ranks.

Swansea are lining up a shock move for Brazil star Lucas Lima to fill Everton-bound Gylfi Sigurdsson's boots.

The Welsh club have made Santos sensation Lima their top target to replace unsettled skipper Sigurdsson, whose exit is being delayed until they find a replacement.

Lima, 27, has won a dozen caps, plays in the No 10 role and is in the Sigurdsson mould.
