What are ABBA penalties?

The new system caused quite a stir on Sunday, when Arsenal beat Chelsea in the Community Shield.

Instead of teams taking it in turns for the spot kicks, the ABBA system sees the first team taking one, then the second team taking two in a row, modelled on a tennis tie break.

So, rather than one team taking first and the other following, the idea is that one team takes a penalty, followed by the opposition taking two penalties.

Each team then alternates in taking two penalties until a result is achieved.

The idea behind the change is to take away the unfair disadvantage the team that takes the second penalty supposedly has when they have to kick to stay in the game.

Will ABBA penalties be used tonight in the Super Cup?

No.

UEFA have confirmed to SunSport: "The ‘ABBA’ penalty system will not be used at the UEFA Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Manchester United .

"The system was only in use at the UEFA U19 and UEFA U17 men’s and women’s finals this summer."

The Super Cup, should it go to penalties, the penalty system will go back to the old style known by all.

So, which competitions will the system be used in next season?

The EFL have announced that ABBA penalties will be trialled across all its competitions.

That means that the League Cup and Checkatrade Trophy will both be using the system.

And ABBA penalties could also decide which teams get promoted as they will be used in the EFL playoffs.

Is there extra time in the Super Cup?

Yes.

There will be two additional periods of 15 minute halves before penalties, should the tie be a draw after 90 minutes.
