Come out smelling like roses

Danny Rose deserves praise for his explosive Tottenham revelations… despite incredibly hinting he may leave

HAS everyone caught their breath yet? Good.

In one of the most outspoken interviews ever by a top flight player, Danny Rose has sent Spurs into a small panic just days before their Premier League return.

It's a strange catch-22 we find ourselves in. We spend most of our lives begging to be let behind the velvet curtain of the internal monologue of our club's staff and players, but when it's there for us, we don't want to read it.

NOT PICKED YOUR FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM YET? WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Rose has done just that, voicing opinions that many Spurs fans have held for years.

With players on the same page as fans, why are the club so far behind the rest of us? Is there something we're not being told, or are we simply not the big club we thought we were?

It's an interesting question. The North Londoners have had many years to prepare for life at the top again.

In 2010, Harry Redknapp guided the club to the Champions League, a staggering seven years ago. So why hasn't it yet dawned on us that we're a big player in England now?

Treating our players, fans and transfer targets in equal measure is something that needs to happen immediately, with player wages something that must be addressed.

We have the lowest paid top players in the league with the highest paid chairman at the helm. That balance is worrying.

Rose's views on incoming talent very much echoed that.

As comical as it first appeared, the Yorkshireman's comments on signing players you "don't have to Google," are frighteningly accurate.

A club that has been in two successive title races should be able to cherry pick players from the finest clubs in Europe. Shouldn't it?

True, the left-back is not the first person consulted over which targets the club are moving for. Although the addition of Ross Barkley - someone Rose picked out as a viable option - would be good for the squad, the former Leeds man is oblivious to whether Tottenham have actually moved for him. They may well have done.

It's very difficult not to respect Rose in this situation however. Every ounce of what he's said is true, with his disappointment over the loss of Kyle Walker something we all share.

His respect for Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy equally commendable.

The left-back may well be hit with a fine after the interview, but he maintained a high level of regard throughout, something he must be praised for despite suggesting he would consider a move away.

But that leaves us with the one resounding question. Why did Rose feel the need to say this? Why now?

It's largely a hunt to get him and his team-mates the wages they deserve. With only Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris above the £100,000-a-week mark, the likes of Rose and Toby Alderweireld must be puzzled by their £60k-a-week pay packets.

The player has often spoken of his love of the Tottenham manager, and a bid for a move away seems especially far-fetched this summer.

This is a direct call to Levy. The chairman promised fans that the club's new £800million stadium would not impact incoming signings. He is yet to show this, with a chunky £50m accumulated towards this total through the sale of Walker.

The atmosphere around our resident Yorkshireman has now changed. When he stepped foot into training today, the players and staff must have been cautious.

The way our football club reacts in the coming days may have huge repercussions for the season ahead

Buckle down everyone, this might get ugly.
