Far from Rosey

Tottenham chief Daniel Levy would happily cash-in on outspoken Danny Rose… as he has a £750million stadium to fund

In an era when players trot out the same old tired cliches, the Spurs star should be commended for giving it to us straight

DANNY ROSE is set to become the latest to discover that, sadly, honesty is not always the best policy in football.

In an era when players trot out the same old tired cliches and untruthful soundbites, the Tottenham star should be commended for giving it to us straight in his explosive interview with The Sun last week.

But his decision to shoot straight from the lip is likely to scupper his chances of getting a move from Spurs, certainly in this window.

Rose rocked the North Londoners by slamming their spending on wages and new signings.

He also admitted he would one day like to follow his pal Kyle Walker out the door at Tottenham and return to his native North, with Manchester United seemingly the most likely destination that neck of the woods.

But Rose could also go West, with Chelsea also showing a keen interest in signing him.

The England left-back is clearly ambitious and made no secret of his desire to move on to better things.

He may have been applauded by his Tottenham team-mates for speaking out but his interview did not go down well with Daniel Levy.

Rose has already been for breaking club rules on media interviews, which have to be sanctioned by Spurs execs and are usually only given in association with one of their commercial or community ventures.

But the defender is set to receive an even greater punishment – by being made to stay at Tottenham.

Levy has never broken any club rules on interviews because he never gives any interviews.

He is fully aware of Chelsea’s interest in Rose and with a new £750million stadium to pay for, there is no doubt Tottenham would welcome the transfer fee they could get for their longest-serving player they signed from Leeds for just £1m a decade ago.

But the Spurs chairman is not a man who likes being crossed.

The word on the freshly mowed pitches of Tottenham’s Enfield training HQ is that Levy will not lose face by letting Rose leave this summer.

Forget the figures being spoken about in connection with a possible transfer, this has become a point of principle for the chairman.

And as any Premier League executive who has had the misfortune to negotiate with Levy will tell you, once he sets his mind on something it is very difficult to get him to change it again.

That said, it would be interesting to see what would happen if United or Chelsea were to make an extraordinary offer.

But for now, the feeling at Tottenham is that Rose will be going nowhere in this transfer window.

So if he thought his interview would force through a move, he may have to think again.

How typically Levy.

He may lose the odd battle, but rarely the war.
