Kyle Walker-Peters set for new Tottenham contract as Mauricio Pochettino puts faith in young full-back

Walker-Peters in line for third deal in the space of 18-months after making his mark in Premier League debut at Newcastle as Spurs again decide to back youth ahead of transfers

TOTTENHAM are ready to tie Kyle Walker-Peters down to a new long-term contract as Mauricio Pochettino puts his faith in the young defender.

Spurs have been in the hunt for right-back ever since Kyle Walker quit the club to join Manchester City over the summer.

The loss of first choice Kieran Trippier through injury for the opening few weeks of the season added more urgency for the club to bring someone new in.

But boss Pochettino has been so impressed with Walker-Peters since the squad returned for pre-season training he opted to give the youngster a chance instead.

And the 20-year-old made a huge impression with his accomplished display on his Premier League debut against Newcastle last week.

That helped convince Pochettino there was more urgency to address issues in other areas of his squad - with Walker-Peters again likely to feature against Chelsea today.

Pochettino has also told chairman Daniel Levy he wants the defender, who has the ability to play on either side, to be tied down with a new long-term contract.

And should that be agreed it will be the third new deal he has signed with the London club in the past 18 months.

Walker-Peters has made huge progress at Spurs over the past year, impressing the coaching staff with his displays with the development squad.

He also shone on the international stage, playing a key role in the England side who won the under-20 World Cup over the summer.

The defender has returned following the break in confident form and his displays in training and friendlies in pre-season have been enough to convince Pochettino he is worthy of a place in the first team squad.

Spurs boss Pochettino has only made one new signing so far over the summer, having captured Davinson Sanchez in a £40million deal last week.
