And one of the first articles published was an image of the former Arsenal striker in an article titled: Spanish Police crack gang moving migrants on jet-skis.

The picture used was of Podolski during the 2014 World Cup.

It is understood that Breitbart used a stock image of a jet-ski, with the American site clearly unaware at the significance of the passenger.

Social media went into meltdown with users queuing up to make gags about the mistake.

Podolski is currently plying his trade in Japan after leaving Galatasaray.

He spent three seasons at Arsenal from 2012 to 2015 — winning the FA Cup twice.

The striker was part Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad and is his country’s third-most capped player.

He scored the winner in a 1-0 friendly win over England in his final international appearance.

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are among other big names Podolski has turned out for.
