Roo's reawakening

Wayne Rooney’s high-energy performance for Everton against Manchester City earned rave reviews… but he actually ran more for Manchester United last season

WAYNE ROONEY has received rave reviews since returning to Everton from Manchester United.

England and United's all-time record goalscorer Roo, 31, had fallen well out of favour under Jose Mourinho and allowed to rejoin his boyhood club this summer.

Last season there were a host of claims suggesting his legs had gone and he wasn't anywhere near the energetic influence he once was.

However, a pair of strong performances in the Premier League - scoring in the win over Stoke and draw with Manchester City - have seen the critics go quiet.

It's not just his goalscoring performances attracting praise though, as many have claimed the "old-style" Rooney has returned as he marauds the field of play.

Roo certainly put in an energetic shift against City at the Etihad as he scored what looked to be the Toffees' winner.

In fact, no Everton man ran further than Rooney on the night, as he covered an impressive 10.7km during the game, reaching a top speed of 30.8km/h.

On top of that, Roo embarked on an impressive 42 sprints during the clash in Eastlands.

This led many supporters to claim he is just happier and more grateful to be at Everton, rather than his lacklustre past few seasons at Old Trafford.

However, it would appear that is not the case, as Rooney was just as hard-working last season as he has been so far this term.

In fact, per 90 minutes in the 2016-17 season, Rooney averaged 11.3km - MORE than Monday night's outing.

Food for thought, but either way, it's great to see a true legend of the modern game firing on all cylinders and full of confidence again...
