United were seeded in Pot 2 - the second highest - along with Barcelona, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, PSG, Borussia Dortmund and Porto.

And they managed to avoid the big dogs and potential banana skins in the other pots to be drawn in what looks like a favourable Group A.

There will be added interest for Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic, who will return to their former club Benfica.

United qualified for the Champions League - despite finishing sixth in the Premier League last season - by winning the Europa League.

United fans were quick to start celebrating, with many posting before the last team - CSKA Moscow - had even been drawn.

However, recent history brings a dire warning for United's celebrating fans.

In 2011, the Red Devils failed to get out of their Champions League group - featuring Benfica and Basel.

Some of their more informed fans were aware of this and immediately started tweeting warnings.
