And, while discussing the potential transfer of Robert Snodgrass, Bruce said he would love to bring the 25-year-old to Villa Park as they make a serious push for promotion.

Bruce told talkSPORT: “Snoddy is somebody I’ve known for a long time – I bought him for Hull – so that’s something we’re looking into and exploring.

"The Jack Wilshere one – hey, who wouldn’t want Jack Wilshere?

“But I don’t know whether we’re capable of landing him and let’s not forget he’s only 25.

"People have said that I’ve got millions and millions to spend, where it’s been the complete opposite.

“With financial fair play, unfortunately we haven’t got millions and millions to spend so I’ve got to be a little bit prudent, see what we can do and try and balance the books.”

He went out on loan to Bournemouth last season but his time with the south-coast club was cut short after breaking his leg.

Wilshere has returned for the Gunners but he was sent off during an Under-23s match against Manchester City after reacting badly to a foul.

And Wenger has admitted Wilshere must prove his fitness in the coming months if he wants a new contract.

The Frenchman said: “You know how much I love Jack and his talent. But today in the football world you need a consistent presence.

“What is at stake for Jack is not his quality or his talent, it is his presence at the top.

“His quality is not in doubt.”
