Tottenham’s Champions League ‘Group of Death’ could be the kiss of life to their Wembley woes

Why the visits of European giants Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund can only be a good thing for Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs squad

THE Champions League "Group of Death" could be the kiss of life for Tottenham’s wheezing Wembley campaign.

Not many are expecting Mauricio Pochettino’s men to finish above Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund Group H.

And that can only be a good thing in their sole season under the Arch which has already come under serious scrutiny.

Tottenham’s temporary home has already been blamed for their defeat against Chelsea last week.

The last thing Spurs need is Wembley to be held responsible for another Champions League disaster.

So this toughest of draws could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

If the North Londoners do spring a surprise by making it through to the qualifying stage then it will do wonders for their confidence and put to bed all remaining talk of a Wembley jinx.

If they get knocked out, it will not be that great a deal as they are not tipped to get through anyway.

It may sound defeatist, but in this unusual campaign Tottenham need to feast on every available crumb of comfort.

The Champions League draw did not provide many of those yesterday.

It might have thrown up glamour ties against Real Madrid and Dortmund – but there is not much glamour in defeat.

The Germans might not be in the Spaniards class, but they are still likely to be a force to be reckoned with, even if the ‘Yellow Wall’ is not as robust and overpowering as it was a few years ago under Jurgen Klopp.

Tottenham have improved no end since Pochettino took over three years ago. But they would have to surpass and play above themselves to progress in Europe’s elite competition – especially as they will have Dele Alli suspended for the start of their bid.

One, possibly the only consolation is that with APOEL the other team in the group, at least Spurs should make it through to the Europa League, which like Manchester United last season, could end up being their best route back into the Champions League next season.

Mind you, that will not be easy with Arsenal and Everton both in this year’s competition.
