The 20-year-old impressed Jurgen Klopp in pre season games and the former Borussia Dortmund chief wants him to go to Germany to bring him up to speed.

Kent was wanted on loan by several Championship sides after a good year at Barnsley.

However, Freiburg is seen as a better next step - offering him both a higher level of football and rich experience of the continental game.

Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Sunderland all tried to take on Kent before the late German interest.

But his move today confirms the upward path his career has taken in the last two seasons, although he is still waiting for his senior Liverpool debut.

The Oldham-born prospect played 17 games on loan with Coventry in 2015-16.

And last term he bagged three goals in 44 games for Barnsley as they finished 14th in the Championship.

Kent played twice for England Under-18s and six times for the Under-20s.

His temporary switch today confirms how keen Klopp is for his younger, fringe players to toughen themselves up with first-team matches elsewhere.

Liverpool also loaned striker Divock Origi to the German top-flight today.

The Belgian star, 22, has joined Wolfsburg for the season after netting 12 times in his three years at Anfield.
