But a deal could not be struck on transfer deadline day and Costa will now remain at Stamford Bridge until at least January.

Recent reports claim the Spain international could now be handed a reprieve by Chelsea after he was included in their 25-man squad for the new Premier League season.

But the Telegraph claims Costa has not made peace with Conte just yet.

In fact, he has apparently given no indication that he is prepared to return to London after remaining in Brazil over the summer.

Chelsea chiefs have demanded Costa comes back to Cobham in a bid to regain his fitness and put himself in the running for a first-team place.

However, a move back to Atletico seems the most likely outcome, with the Spaniards able to sign players again in January following a transfer ban.

Further reports claim Atleti have told Costa to play along with Chelsea’s demands in order to secure a deal this winter.

His previous antics saw his price-tag rise last month, which is sure to have prevented Atletico from already reaching an agreement.

But despite being included in the Premier League squad, Costa looks set to miss out on the Champions League list as he would not be able to play in the competition for a new club should Chelsea call upon his services in the upcoming months.
