League it out

As Chelsea omit Diego Costa from their Champions League squad, who are the other big names left out of Europe’s elite competition this season?

Tottenham and Liverpool among the clubs to make some surprising selection decisions ahead of this term's European journey

DIEGO COSTA is not the only big name omitted from this year's Champions League.

It was no surprise the Chelsea outcast missed out after being told to find himself a new club by boss Antonio Conte.

All 32 Champions League clubs yesterday named their squads to play in this season's competition.

They are able to rename them in January after the transfer window.

Here, SunSport takes a look at stars who did not make the cut.

ERIK LAMELA

The Tottenham winger is nursing a hip injury and is not expected back until at least November.

Lamela has not played for Spurs since a League Cup defeat to Liverpool in October.

Spurs will therefore rely on Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min to support Harry Kane up front.

French flop Moussa Sissoko is also a shock inclusion.

Vincent Janssen

Spurs' misfiring hitman also misses out having managed to score just two Premier League goals last term.

Instead, new-boy Fernando Llorente has been named following his £15million summer move from Swansea.

The Spaniard has Champions League experience with Juventus and Sevilla, even playing in the 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the final for the Old Lady in 2015.

Nathaniel Clyne

Liverpool's rapid right-back is a shock omission for their return to the Champions League.

Clyne is out with a back KO and no return date set for his comeback.

But the Reds' inclusion of Adam Lallana - out injured until November - may raise questions.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was the hero against Hoffenheim to help Liverpool qualify for the Champions League, and Joe Gomez are both named.

Danny Ings

Rotten injury luck means Liverpool ditched Ings for their European journey.

The former Burnley striker is out with knee ligament damage and, despite working hard to regain his fitness, is not yet an option for Jurgen Klopp.

Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge are the out-and-out forwards named in the German's squad, while new boy Dominic Solanke is also included.

Marco Reus

The Borussia Dortmund star is another cursed by injury.

Reus is suffering from a knee crock and has no return date yet.

But it is good news for Mario Gotze who makes the cut after recovering from metabolic disturbances.

Stefan Lichtsteiner

Juventus' Swiss right-back makes way for new signings Mattia De Sciglio and Benedikt Howedes.

Lichtsteiner has been a regular in the Champions League since and, alongside Llorente, played in the 2015 final against Barcelona.

Hatem Ben Arfa

Paris Saint-Germain's skilful forward was always going to miss out.

The arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe means competition is fiercer than ever at PSG.

And former Newcastle star Ben Arfa not only finds himself out of the Champions League squad, but is rotting in the reserves at the Ligue 1 giants after refusing to leave in the summer.

On the other side of the coin, there are some shock inclusions this season.

Jose Mourinho included Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his squad despite the Swede not being expected to return from injury until January.

Striker James Wilson also makes the cut despite not playing for United since October 2015.

Manchester City have included 16-year-old Phil Foden, while teenager Jake Clarke-Salter and Kyle Scott are both surprise names for Chelsea.
