, 25, slapped in a transfer request almost a month ago in an attempt to force through a move to Barca.

But Reds swatted away four bids, including one of £138million on deadline day, as Jurgen Klopp and owners Fenway Sports Group refused to sell their star player.

Coutinho is yet to play for his club this season because of a back injury.

But after linking up with his national side for substitute appearances in World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Colombia, he is now in contention to face Manchester City on Saturday.

Coutinho returned to England on a private jet yesterday with club-mate Roberto Firmino, City trio Ederson, Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus and Chelsea's Willian.

Reds have confirmed that Coutinho and Firmino, along with eight other internationals, were back at Melwood on Thursday.

With just 47 minutes of competitive action under his belt, it remains to be seen whether Klopp picks Coutinho to start at the Etihad.

A leading Barcelona board member said Liverpool set an asking price of £185m for the midfielder.

But the English club responded angrily to his claim and were quoted as saying it was "absolutely false".
