Arsene Wenger claims Arsenal CAN still win the Premier League this season despite problems on and off the field

ARSENE WENGER says Arsenal can still land the Premier League title — despite their woeful start.

The Gunners are in crisis after losing 4-0 at Liverpool last time out following an appalling performance, their second straight defeat.

They then missed out on Monaco’s Thomas Lemar — despite a £92million bid — while wantaway Alexis Sanchez is staying at the club after a £60m switch to Manchester City fell through.

But despite not strengthening, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joining Liverpool for £35m and criticism from several legends including SunSport columnists Ian Wright and Thierry Henry, Wenger still has his head in the sand.

And when asked if Arsenal can still be challengers, the Emirates chief  insisted: “Yes. Why not? Because we have played three games and two away games. OK, we lost at Liverpool but we can redress the situation well and quickly.

"Some teams who are the new favourites, they are not in a better position than us.”

Wenger’s comments come after chief executive Ivan Gazidis claimed Arsenal’s squad was “improved” after summer business despite just one major signing, £44m Alexandre Lacazette.

But the Frenchman agrees with his boss and now wants his men to prove it on the pitch.

When asked whether he believed Gazidis was right by saying Arsenal were stronger, Wenger replied: “Yes, I think we are strong enough, yes.

“Are we stronger? I think it depends on what period of the season. We had contrasting periods of the season last year. We have to show that you can improve the team by being together and improving together.

“Last year we made 75 points, we won the FA Cup and this year we have to do better.”

Wenger opted to sign a new two-year contract at the end of last season after seeing his side beat Chelsea in the Cup final.

And he insists he does not regret that decision.

Wenger, 67, said: “My personal situation is not  important.

“What is important is Arsenal Football Club and the position of the team and that’s what I care about.”

Arsenal host Bournemouth today looking to follow up their opening day 4-3 win over Leicester and forget all about the losses at Stoke and  Liverpool.

They play a Cherries side who have lost all three games so far and anything but a win will put Wenger under immense pressure. He said: “It’s never a good time to play anybody. It’s a good time for us to focus on our performance and show that we are united.

“We have played three games. We have played two away games and we have 35 games to go in the championship.

“We will recover the points we lost away from home. It’s important we continue our form at home.

“It’s important to put things into perspective.”

Sanchez could well start for Arsenal despite only recently returning to fitness, a long trip away with Chile and his failed move to City.
