Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admits he was priced out of a move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans

PEP GUARDIOLA has revealed Manchester City were priced out of a move for Jonny Evans.

The Citizens were desperate to bring the Northern Ireland star to the club during the summer transfer window.

But West Brom stood firm and refused to do business for any less than £35million.

City tabled several offers for the 29-year-old but failed to match the valuation of the Baggies.

And their boss Guardiola has admitted he missed out on the former Manchester United man due to finances.

The ex-Barcelona chief said: "My colleague Tony Pulis put a price that we couldn't afford at that moment.

"I don't know about the summer or next season but now he's a player for West Brom.

"We will survive. In the end we spent money, we sold players.

"We bought five players who cost around £35m each. It's not a big issue because we sold a lot.

"We've got money to invest again. I'm happy with the squad and we'll move forward with that."

Despite his interest in Evans, Guardiola does still have four centre-backs at his disposal.

But one man equally frustrated at the failure to land the West Brom centre-half is Eliaquim Mangala.

The French international wanted out of the Etihad after being deemed surplus to requirements.

After spending last season on loan at Valencia, the 26-year-old looked set to join either Crystal Palace or Inter Milan.

But City kept hold of the ace as cover after being unable to bring in Evans as a replacement.

The summer transfer window was one the craziest we have ever seen.
