But Sanchez was rewarded with his show of faith by not making the starting XI for the clash at the Emirates.

And Twitter users were quick to vent their feelings at Wenger.

One said: "Only in a world of madness would Welbeck start over Alexis Sanchez."

Another wrote: "Why is the main man Alexis Sanchez on the bloody bench?"

A fellow Twitter user said: "What s*** does Wenger feats on, leaving Alexis Sanchez on the bench for Welbeck. Seriously?"

Another posted: "We're doing our best to convince Alexis Sanchez to move in Jan."

One person said: "Alexis Sanchez is actually on the bench. Wenger you've lost it."

An Arsenal fan wrote: "Danny Welbeck starts over Alexis Sanchez. Kill. Me. Now."

There were some mitigating circumstances, however.

Sanchez was in action for his homeland in their World Cup qualifiers, starting in the 1-0 defeat to Bolivia and 3-0 home defeat to Paraguay.
