'Not acceptable at all'

Chelsea face FA action over anti-Semitic sections of Alvaro Morata song during 2-1 victory over Leicester

CHELSEA could face punishment from the FA after their fans indulged in offensive anti-Semitic chanting during their 2-1 win over Leicester.

Stamford Bridge chiefs were swift to condemn the song, supposedly dedicated to Alvaro Morata, which contains offensive lyrics relating to Jews.

And they appealed to those who sang it to bin it immediately claiming it embarrassed both the club and Morata.

The Spanish striker scored Chelsea’s opening goal yesterday in a 2-1 win at Leicester but the victory was marred when some travelling fans repeatedly sang: “Morata, whoa, Morata, whoa. He came from Real Madrid, he hates the f**cking Y**s.”

Chelsea wasted no time in condemning the sick song and pleaded with their support to ditch it.

Blues boss Antonio Conte was unaware of the offensive lyrics but Chelsea’s Head of Communications Steve Atkins appealed to fans to heed their pleas.

He said: “I don’t think Antonio was aware of the song. The club and the players appreciate the fans’ passionate support away from home.

“But the language in that song is not acceptable at all.

"We’ve spoken to Alvaro after the game and he does not want to be connected with that song in any way and both the club and the player request the supporters stop singing that song with immediate effect.”

Chelsea face a Champions' League home tie against Qarabag FK on Tuesday and any repeat of yesterday's lyrics would sure to land the club in hot water and lead to sanctions from Uefa chiefs.

Conte’s men were in control from the off and had the game wrapped up when N’Golo Kante added to Morata’s opener on 50 minutes.

Jamie Vardy reduced the deficit from the penalty spot but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as the travelling champions left with three points.

Immediately after the win - before Morata was made aware of the unsavoury singing – he said: “It is important to win here.

“Always against Leicester at this stadium it is very difficult to win.

“We were in a good position at 2-0 but suffered to the end. This is the Premier League.

“I am good but the most important thing is we are not in the first places and we look forward to moving ahead in the table.”

And Kante, who scored a rare goal against his former side, added: "It is always special to play my old team.

"I had an amazing year here but when I come I try to win and today was important and I am happy to score.

“It is always a pleasure to score but I keep it inside (his celebration) because I want to respect my old team.

“It was a tough game. They had a lot of chances but we fight and had some chances but we won and that is the most important thing.”
