On top of that, the Reds hadn't lost 5-0 since a Bill Shankly-led Huddersfield Town trounced them all the way back in 1958
IT'S was a weekend to forget for Merseyside's two Premier League clubs...
First of all, Liverpool got the weekend off to an abysmal start, as Sadio Mane was sent-off in a 5-0 thrashing away to Manchester City.
Hours later, Tottenham tore Everton to shreds in a comfortable 3-0 win... with the scoreline even flattering the Toffees.
But it wasn't just a bad day in the office, it was the worst combined showing since the 1950-51 season.
That year, on May 5, 1951, Liverpool were beaten 3-1 away to Spurs, while Everton were demolished 6-0 by Sheffield Wednesday - for a combined aggregate of 9-1.
In fact, you could argue that this weekend's combined tally of 8-0 was even worse than the day 67 years ago... as at least then someone scored.
Meanwhile the Etihad Stadium result does bode well for City chief Pep Guardiola, according to the history.
The last manager to watch his side score five unanswered goals against Liverpool, was an Anfield legend himself.

Back in the 1958-59 season, Bill Shankly led Huddersfield Town to a resounding, famous 5-0 win in October.
Shankly spent three years at Huddersfield, between 1956 and 1959... before taking over at Liverpool - clearly impressed by his demolition job just months earlier.
After joining the Reds in the summer, Shankly spent 15 years at Anfield, winning three top-flight titles, two FA Cups and one Uefa Cup.
The Scot boss has gone down as an all-time great... could Pep be on the verge of following in his footsteps?
