The Senegal forward lunged through the air to try and nick the ball in front of City goalkeeper Ederson, but arrived late and caught the stopper in the face.
Mane was immediately given his marching orders as City went on to thump the Merseysiders 5-0 and leaving him facing a three-match ban for serious foul play.
Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp said after the misery in Manchester it would "be a waste of time" lodging an appeal and that "it never works".
The German stated: "Sadio is very, very, very upset. He is shocked about the decision and I am sure also about the situation.
"I am sure enough will find enough reasons to say it was the right decision."
However, they still have time to change their mind and could still contact the FA in the upcoming hours to appeal the severity of the ban.
