Roy Hodgson to take charge of Crystal Palace training on Wednesday morning as he nears signing two-year deal at the club

ROY HODGSON is set to take charge of Crystal Palace training tomorrow as he nears signing a two-year deal.

The ex-England manager, 70, is edging towards the Selhurst Park job following Frank De Boer's sacking after just 77 days in control.

And Hodgson backed himself to lift the Eagles from their dire start.

He said: "It's close [to signing deal]. It's a great opportunity to return to the game. It's a good day for me. I am very happy.

"I'm looking forward to working with the squad. They did really well last season, especially towards the end, so I see no reason why they can't do it again.

"I am very happy to be back working at the highest level at a good football club and I'm hoping now that I should be able to do a good job here.

"I've always got sympathy for managers who lose their jobs but that's not my business. I'm pleased that they've turned to me to take the job on."

Former Fulham and Liverpool manager Hodgson is set to sign a two-year deal at Palace as he aims to steady the ship after an horrendous start to the season.

Leading up to De Boer's sacking, the Eagles had played four times in the Premier League, losing all of them.

On top of that, they became the first team in history to fail to win or score in their opening four games.

Dutch boss De Boer lasted just five games - including the 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich - in his 77-day spell.

Prior to that, he spent a mere 85 days at Inter Milan following his six, trophy-laden years at Ajax.

Now it is over to Hodgson to get the Eagles soaring once more.

However, having been out of management since England's disastrous Euro 2016 campaign - where they were knocked out in the last-16 by Iceland - he may be a little rusty.

The Croydon-born boss will now take control of the club he played for as a youth star back in the 1960s.

With De Boer now gone, it's likely former Liverpool and Bolton assistant manager Sammy Lee will also leave.

Ray Lewington is expected to join as part of the Crystal Palace backroom - having done so under Hodgson at Fulham and England.

Should the deal go through, Hodgson's first game in charge will be the Premier League clash against Southampton at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
