Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says Tottenham snub in 2012 gives him motivation to fire Borussia Dortmund to Champions League victory

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG says the way Tottenham snubbed signing him five years ago is driving him to target inflicting Champions League misery on them tonight.

Aubameyang will spearhead the Borussia Dortmund attack at Wembley as Spurs look to make their mark on Europe after flopping badly last season.

The Gabon star is regarded as one of the best strikers in the game and has been chased by some of the biggest clubs in Europe in recent years.

But he has never forgotten the way he was treated by Spurs when he was on the verge of joining them in 2012.

Aubameyang said: "I was at Tottenham back then, had a tour of the stadium and the training ground.

"We held talks, but after that nobody contacted me again.

"That's definitely extra motivation for me on Wednesday."

At the time, Andre Villas Boas was Tottenham manager and Aubameyang was looking to make his first big move after impressing for St Etienne.

But despite the player wanting to make the switch to White Hart Lane, Villas Boas and Daniel Levy decided not to follow through on their interest.

Aubameyang went on to join Dortmund a year later, making a huge impact and has so far scored 126 goals in 194 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

Three of those strikes came against Tottenham in the Europa League in 2016, and the 28-year-old is looking for a repeat against the London club.

He added: "I want to score again."

That Spurs missed out on signing such a top level striker will come as frustrating news for their supporters.

And his abilities are not lost on Harry Kane, who has finally answered the club's need for a high-class striker.

Kane said: "He's a fantastic striker, he scores goals and makes good runs in behind.

"I'd say we're different strikers, we're not too similar but he's obviously had a fantastic last four or five years.

"Hopefully I can maintain the scoring record and I'm sure he will as well."
