Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo offers amazing explanation for time wasting against Liverpool when his side was in desperate need of a late goal

SEVILLA boss Eduardo Berizzo says he was time wasting against Liverpool, in the second half when his side was behind and desperate for an equaliser, as an apology.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were losing 1-0 in the first half when Berizzo was first warned about throwing the ball when Joe Gomez wanted to take a quick throw.

The dark art made sense at the time as his men were in control at Anfield and hoping to hang on for a vital away win.

But, after the Kop had inspired a comeback and Liverpool were 2-1 up, it made no sense for Berizzo to delay another Gomez throw and he was sent off.

The Argentine served up a brilliant explanation - after the 2-2 draw - when asked why he was running the clock down when his side were desperately in need of a late goal.

Berizzo said: “In the first half, we were winning and Liverpool were on the counter-attack, I did something which was not right.

“I did throw the ball away, I was trying to waste time for my team and stop Liverpool from having a quick counter-attack. I realise that was a mistake.

“However in the second half when a similar thing took place and we were losing, I still decided to throw the ball away to try and make up for what I did in the first half.

“I had realised that was wrong and tried to do the sportsmanlike thing.

“I explained that to my counterpart Liverpool's manager and he understood but the only person that did not understand was the referee.

“The second one was with the right intention.”

Klopp was an unpopular figure in the visiting dugout after Berizzo and his staff accused him of encouraging the ref to banish him to the stands.

But the German revealed they had buried their differences with a changing-room chat.

Klopp said: “I don't think I had any influence on the decision of the ref (to send him to the stands).

"I didn't ask for a red.

“I was not happy about throwing the ball away but we are fine. We spoke about this in the dressing room. He invited me, we spoke about it.”
