Rose has been out since suffering an injury to his left knee against Sunderland in January and is still weeks away from returning to training.

Lamela continues to do rehabilitation work on a hip problem which has kept him out since October 2016 and England full back Rose is enduring the same kind of battle.

Pochettino said: “Of course I suffer because he is our player like Lamela and different players. You always want them fit and healthy and ready to compete available for selection.

“After the long term like him, I think it is difficult for him because players love to play football and be fit and healthy.

“He is suffering a lot – for eight or nine months – since January. It is a very difficult situation.

“We all try – the staff and everyone – to help him to keep pushing and try to be motivated as possible to be fit again and be available to help the team.

“I think they are doing well but still we have to wait and we cannot give a date when they can return to the group and start training.”

On a happier note, Pochettino reckons Harry Kane has a chance to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record of 260.

Kane took his top-flight tally to 80 with his brace at Everton last weekend and is in red-hot form, adding two more in the 3-1 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Pochettino said: “Alan Shearer was a great, one of the best strikers. Harry has all in his hands to try to do everything he wants.

“But he knows well it is step by step and about trying to build his way. I think he is doing fantastic, Harry Kane.

“If you see the stats he has a fantastic record. With Harry’s mentality, all can happen.

“His mentality is to stay here. He is so happy not only in the Premier League, he’s more than happy to stay at Tottenham.

“He shows every single day how he loves the club. Only it is time to wait and enjoy him.”

Colin Hart's verdict: Alvarez to win on points, 2/1

I HAVE the distinct feeling Golovkin has passed his peak.

So it is poker-faced Alvarez on points for me. But he is wise enough to know if he should lose concentration for a second he will end up flat out on the canvas.
